Be at least 16 years old
Be able to read, speak, write, and understand English
Be in physical and mental condition to safely operate a drone
Pass the Unmanned Aircraft General – Small (UAG) knowledge exam
📚 What Apprentices Learn
Airspace rules and sectional charts
Weather interpretation (METARs, TAFs) Airport operations and no-fly zones
Night flying, emergency procedures, and risk mitigation
Legal compliance and waiver requests for advanced operations
🛫 Why It Matters \

TOP is a tiered certification system that aligns remote pilot training with over 300 accredited standards, including best practices, safety protocols, and operational benchmarks. It was created in collaboration with industry leaders to support global acceptance of uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS).
AUVSI accredits training providers who meet rigorous criteria in curriculum quality, instructor qualifications, and safety management. These providers issue Trusted Operator™ certificates to pilots who successfully complete their programs.
To date, over 2,500 Trusted Operator™ certificates have been issued across 31 countries, including the U.S., U.K., Canada, India, and South Africa.
📚 Certification Levels
The Trusted Operator™ Protocol Certification Manual (PCM) defines three levels of certification:
Level 1: Basic operations in low-risk environments
Level 2: Complex operations with elevated safety requirements
Level 3: Advanced operations in high-risk or public safety contexts
Each level corresponds to the complexity and hazards of the UAS mission. Applicants must demonstrate conformance with all protocols relevant to their desired level.
